This article correlates with the article - Transcending the Ego.
Humility is a perquisite quality to preserve a close relationship with the Divine Source. Throughout the Scriptures, there are many examples of Kings and Prophets that took the initiative to humble themselves. Transcending the Ego should be the principal focus in a person’s life. The Ego is a powerful energy of the darkness. The Ego is concerned about itself, its survival, and its domination over the person. The ego strives for complete control. The ego performs three basic themes: self-centered selfishness, strives for control, and playing the victim.
Once a person is able to perceive how the ego operates, then, the person can start to work at transcending their ego, which directly relates to humility. Cultivating the power to transcend will require training and education; research on the subject is mandatory for the clear understanding of transcendence. Once a person learns the power of transcendence from within, and recognize the characteristic performance of the ego, then, the person will clearly understand how the transcendence of the ego can be accomplished.
Furthermore, lowering oneself and living with a healthy self-esteem simultaneously - action is required. Education within the subject of humility can be found in the Hebrew Scriptures. Closely studying the lives of Moses, the Prophets, and the Kings of Israel with humility as the focus, a person will encounter a wealth of information. Humility defines as - "to lower oneself" the context is related with action next to the spoken tongue or an outward appearance. Many religious leaders, members, and followers use an outward appearance to humble, but the obstacle to an outward appearance is ego related. To have a deep relationship with the Divine Spirit of the light - lowering oneself is a vital quality that must be cultivated. An excellent example is the lesson of King Ahab of Israel recorded at First Kings 16:29 - 21:29.
Despite the ingrained practice of idolatry at the time of the ten-tribe kingdom of Israel, the Divine Spirit enabled King Ahab to win wars against King Ben-hadad. The Almighty Divine Spirit attempted to display his power and authority before the eyes of King Ahab, with the confrontation with Baal, despite King Ahab’s wicked behavior. The aggravation was when Ahab had Naboth the Jezreelite murdered and stole his vineyard. The Divine said that he and his household would be extinguished. Read First Kings 21:29. After this judgment of justice, we learn that Ahab humbled himself, and the Divine Spirit needed to bring it to Elijah's attention. The Righteous Divine Spirit distinguished that Ahab put on sackcloth and ashes on his head and walked around meekly. We don't know the circumstance behind wearing sackcloth, but what we can differentiate that action was required and manifested before the eyes of other people. Accordingly, the Divine Spirit of righteousness was flexible and told Ahab that his family name would not be eliminated during his lifetime. Although, Divine favor was not granted because of Ahab’s bad heart condition and behavior.
Nonetheless, We discover that the Almighty Divine Spirit is delighted when people humble themselves, because the action is an agreeable quality. In this world of negativity, discernment and awareness is essential for a person to effectively humble himself or herself. Around the world, homeless people exist. Taking time, visiting, and sitting on the downtown street with someone, before the eyes of the public, is a humbling experience. Helping your fellowman and keeping it to yourself is a sign of humility. People that go around bragging and blowing a trumpet in the eyes are others is an action of the ego that relates with pride and arrogance. A person may produce some good fruit by helping another person, but bragging turns it into rotten fruit. Bragging about oneself is unloving, selfish, and breed’s arrogance.
Additionally, allowing the public to have a false perception can aid to cultivate humility. An example of this concept could be looking homeless, but in reality your not - you have a home and you eat everyday. What is the person's perception? The ego gets frustrated because it wants people to notice you and take credit. People of religion may have a perception relating to people that are not members of their church. Their perception is that you might need help from their church and that you might be lost spiritually, but in reality you have a very deep relationship with the Divine and advanced knowledge of the truth; the reason for their perception is because your not a member of their church. The ego is involved with members of religion that they are correct and special. From experience, this situation with clergy and members of religion is common. Allow people to have their own perception.
The preponderance of individuals that are in the public eye, remain in the public eye for a reason. The attention from the public eye creates a feeling of being special and their ego thrives from the attention. Public attention upon oneself and transcending the ego can be an impossible undertaking to accomplish.
Use discernment - the ego strives to be number one and its desire is to gain attention from human eyes. By implementing the opposite, keeping yourself low before others, allowing others their perception, and staying out of the public eye will be a great value in the eyes of the Divine. Thus, inner blessings will fall upon the person. Moses promised that blessings would be granted upon a person that keeps the commandments by cultivating humility - arrogance will be far removed from the inner heart and mind. King Saul is an excellent example of an arrogant heart. King David is an exceptional exemplification of humility established from a good heart. Humble oneself, because humility is in opposition to the darkness, though, in agreement with the light.
