Spiritually, acting unselfishly to someone who may have transgressed against you is essential. It is impossible for person attain the ultimate reality through selfish deeds. A deeper definition of love is acting unselfish to the neighbor - especially the stranger. The world teaches selfishness. A common statement taught is “don’t talk to the stranger”. Propaganda of the mass media has indoctrinated an ideology that causes fear and selfishness within the heart and mentality of humanity. Moses aptly teaches concerning the stranger, Moses related the stranger according to his era, and the circumstances of the Israelites.
“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.” - Leviticus 19:33-34Jesus’ teaching amplifies the importance of unselfish deeds concerning the stranger, contrasting unselfish deeds in relation to the companion.
“If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?” - Matthew 6:46-47Moses taught within a story format, in the book of Numbers a deeper meaning of context of love is taught, that is to act unselfish to the stranger, and the stranger is thy neighbor. The stories of the Kings of Israel require close consideration, most notably King Saul and King David. The context Jesus taught is equivalent to what Moses and the Prophets taught. For a person to understand the Greek Scriptures (New Testament), a clear comprehensive understanding of the Hebrew Scriptures is a required.
During the epoch Jesus was on the earth, Baal worship in the format of religion was at its height through the Pharisees of Judaism. This is why Jesus said, "You heard it was said" - yes, the Scribes and Pharisees was teaching falsehood. The religious worship was in the arrangement of synagogues. As in nowadays, falsehood and idolatry was rampant; the structure or appearance of worship was altered from the days of the Kings, before 586 BCE. The teaching of faith and love from the writings of Moses were not taught correctly at the time of Jesus, instead religious dogma was taught.
Moses taught how to act unselfishly concerning the stranger. Going out of our way, helping materially, giving of our time, are deeds that the Sacred Spirits distinguishes. The result will be a blessing, such as being granted with wisdom, discernment, integrity, Divine direction, and Divine protection, spiritual blessings that outweigh material objects.
Discernment is essential to identify a situation when someone needs help and that deserves help. Making someone else happy, lending a helping hand appropriately that they cannot believe that you are actually lending a helping hand - the heart rejoices. As a result, true happiness is experienced within the heart. Helping the stranger is special because you might never see the person again; therefore, a return is not expected. This is the hidden gift from above related to unselfish deeds in respects to the stranger. Family and friends sometimes expect to receive something back, not always, but from experience, most do. Read what Jesus taught in connection of the judgment time and the action that is involved concerning the stranger?
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the an-gels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." - Matthew 25:31-46Jesus is teaching about the results of action, unselfish deeds concerning their fellow citizen. Those types of people will live in the kingdom of righteousness as a Sacred Spirit in the new heavens or as a human in the new earth. There will be many people saying that they did do these things and Jesus says more then once in Matthew that they are workers of lawlessness. Indeed, they went to church, but did they learn non-attachment and cultivated unselfishness in their heart? The answer is they will not be allowed into the kingdom, because of selfishness. An ego-driven attitude such as selfishness is lawlessness. Moses taught to circumcise the heart.
The world that is under the power of the wicked one - teaches the opposite. The world teaches the ego-driven idea of self. The world teaches to pursue selfishness and greed, to avoid the stranger, and that the lowly, such as being homeless or poor are subhuman. A common statement - I work hard for my money - people with that attitude will never learn the truth. They will be subjected to living powerless to circumcise the heart and change the motivation. Most people are just to busy, focused on their own life to change spiritually.
Fasting or observing the Sabbath is fruitless if a person is selfish to the stranger and neighbor. The scriptures clearly teach that sacrifices, such as worship are worth-less, if the person is avoiding unselfish deeds. Isaiah, supporting the teaching of Moses taught the same idea, action is required concerning love and the stranger.
“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your heal-ing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, Here I am. If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in. If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honor-able; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spo-ken.” - Isaiah 58 6-14The Scriptures teach acting unselfishly to the stranger.
The Bhagavad Gita teaches non-attachment toward our actions; not having an attachment to the fruits of our actions. Give - for your heart will rejoice; although, do not be concerned about the results. This is why a circumcised heart results in a generous heart - thus, happiness is attained.
